What are Weight Loss Injections?
Weight Loss Injections are an injectable medication, administered once a week, initially formulated to manage blood sugar for type 2 diabetes for adults to reduce appetite and increase insulin production.
How does it work?
Weight Loss Injections contain the active ingredient Semagludite which is 94% identical to the naturally occurring hormone (GLP-1) receptor antagonist produced by the gut while eating. This hormone regulates appetite and insulin secretion. It also slows down the stomach emptying process giving the sensation of feeling full and reducing the amount of food eaten. This mechanism is beneficial for both diabetes control and weight loss.

What is the procedure time?
One self-administered injection per week for 4 weeks
Does the treatment hurt?
No, the injection is administered to the stomach giving the feeling of slight pressure and a minor scratch from the injection. Full training will be provided.
Treatment will be prescribed following a thorough face-to-face consultation with the Advanced Nurse Practitioner / Independent Prescriber to assess suitability to commence and monitor the treatment.
Weight Loss Injections can only be used as a weight loss treatment for people who:
- have previously attempted and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise alone
- for those with BMI over 30 (or 27 with weight-related comorbidity)
Who is NOT suitable?
- Type 1 diabetics or taking diabetic medication
- Pregnant and/or breastfeeding
- Under the age of 18 and above 75
- Anyone who has had pancreatitis or gallstones
- Kidney problems
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Thyroid problems
What are the side effects?
As with all medications, Weight Loss Injections have the potential to cause side effects. When you first start the injection you may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and reflux. Therefore, the injections are started at the lowest dose and increased gradually over time to prevent and avoid any unwanted side effects. Treatment will be closely monitored following a thorough face-to-face consultation with the Advanced Nurse Practitioner/Independent Prescriber. This allows for dose titrating (adjustments) and support throughout the journey.
How fast can I see results?
Weight loss results differ from person to person. A healthy diet and regular exercise are recommended alongside using Weight Loss Injections. A minimum of 5% weight loss of your initial body weight is expected after completing 12 weeks of treatment.
